Playbook RG

01 · Playbook Brand: defines the standard

Player education, built like a brand.

Playbook Brand is the open core of the system: everything you need for gambling entertainment literacy, not a page of legal text. Voice, messaging, visual identity, game guides, and ready-to-use templates, dedicated to the public domain under CC0.

Public domain under CC0: no permission or attribution required, and no per-seat fees.

Real collateral from the CC0 system: a venue poster, a hot-streak myth-buster, and a house-edge card.

The premise

Player education worth reading.

Playbook RG treats player education as a design problem, not a box to tick: explain the odds in plain math, name the tools by what they do, and make the material good enough that someone chooses to read it.

The result is a complete brand with a defined voice, visual system, and content library ready for launch.

“Every game has math. Every player has choices.”
The opening line of the Playbook RG template.

What’s inside

Explore the Brand system.

Playbook RG is maintained in a public repository of Markdown content and specifications. This library presents the same material as plain-language pages: foundations, voice, design, copy, game guides, and jurisdiction modules.

Brand book

The foundations: who Playbook RG is, how it speaks, and how it shows up. Strategy and the brand pillars, the personality, voice and tone, the message hierarchy, accessibility, application, governance, and cultural adaptation.

Messaging library

Jurisdiction-agnostic copy tagged by pillar, tone, and channel. Swap in your program name and helpline, then use the copy across your channels.

Messages, myths, CTAs, and campaigns, with before/after rewrites, stigma-free swaps, and player-segment guidance alongside.

Game guides

Plain-language guides to how each game works: the odds, the house edge, and the myths worth correcting. Written for players at a sixth-to-eighth-grade reading level.

Glossary

Gambling terms in plain language, each with the phrasing the system prefers: “set your deposit limit,” not “restrict your deposits”; “cool-off period,” never “temporary ban”; “tools,” never “interventions.”

The voice

The principles behind every line.

The whole system speaks in one voice. The same principles guide every line, from a social card to a self-exclusion screen.

  1. 01

    Informed, not alarming

Explain the odds and the tools plainly, and trust the reader with the facts instead of frightening them away.

  2. 02

    Your choice, your tools

Agency comes first: players choose whether and how to use these tools; the tools are not controls imposed on an account.

  3. 03

    Specific, not sloganeering

Name the behavior, “set your budget before you start,” instead of reaching for “play responsibly.”

  4. 04

    Fun is the point

Gambling is entertainment, and the voice says so; the goal is informed play, not shame.

  5. 05

    Real talk

Plain language at a sixth-to-eighth-grade reading level: no euphemisms, no clinical jargon.

  6. 06

    Inclusive by default

Person-first, stigma-free wording that works across markets and audiences.

Your ‘lucky machine’ has the emotional range of a toaster.

How it works

Templates and configuration stay separate.

Collateral is a template plus a configuration. Brand, message, and market are separate inputs, so one template renders correctly for any operator in any jurisdiction: change the palette and the whole library restyles, change the market and the helpline and age line follow.

Change the brand settings to update the palette, type, and wordmark. Change the market to update the regulatory text. The underlying template stays the same.

The brand book

The whole system, written down.

Everything above is specified in the brand book: the voice principles and tone spectrum, the visual identity down to the photography direction and contrast rules, the message hierarchy, accessibility, application, governance, and cultural adaptation. Readable in full, public domain under CC0.

Make it yours

Fork it. Edit one file. Launch your own.

Playbook RG is a starting point you can adapt to your program. Fork the repository, edit _brand.yml (program name, palette, helpline, jurisdiction), and the whole system restyles: templates, widgets, and game guides. CC0 allows you to adapt and publish it without additional permission or attribution.

  1. 01

    Fork

Clone the public repository. The content and code are dedicated to the public domain under CC0.

  2. 02

    Edit _brand.yml

Set your program name, colors, fonts, helpline, and minimum age. The guided configurator writes the file for you, or edit it by hand.

  3. 03

    Build and publish

Run the build, or add brand-inject.css to the page template. The widgets, JSON feeds, and generated assets use your settings.

Public domain. No license to negotiate, no attribution owed, no per-seat fees.

This page is part of the same open system.

In the system

Brand defines it. The rest of the system runs on it.

Playbook Brand is the open core. The hosted products run on the same standard: Academy teaches it, Tools operationalize it, Review measures against it.

Common questions

What operators ask.

Is this really free?

Yes. Everything in the Brand system is dedicated to the public domain under CC0. No permission or attribution is required, and there are no per-seat fees.

Will it match our brand?

The configurator swaps the default palette, type, and program name for yours, and the whole system updates: templates, widgets, game guides. Beyond that, every file is yours to edit: override the CSS, replace the copy, keep what works.

Does it meet regulatory requirements?

The system was designed by a gambling-policy researcher who has advised regulators for more than fifteen years. Jurisdiction modules cover the United Kingdom, Macau, Singapore, Malta, Denmark, U.S. states, and Canadian provinces. Your compliance team remains responsible for final approval.

What if we need help deploying?

Engagement tiers run from a one-to-two-day configuration sprint to a full program with staff training and ongoing support. See the get-started page for what each includes.

Who made this?

Kahlil Simeon-Rose, Ph.D. He is a tenured associate professor at Washington State University, co-developer of the Positive Play Scale, GameSense, and RG Check, and a two-time National Council on Problem Gambling research award recipient.

Why give it away?

A public-domain baseline gives players, operators, and regulators access to the same player-education material. Removing license and attribution requirements makes that material easier to adopt and adapt.

For implementation support ranging from a one-to-two-day configuration sprint to a full program, see the get-started page.

Use the standard
